Materials List

Materials can be purchased at Michaels Stores or Red Pine Art Supply in Huntsville. Or buy online at DeSerres, and Michaels Stores (canada.michaels.com). You can also buy a set of supplies for a $25 materials fee.

Paint: Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson (Permanent), Ultramarine Blue, Thalo (Phthalo) Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Titanium White. If you’re just beginning to paint, you can buy the smaller tubes, but use artist grade (not student grade) paint. Also acceptable is Winton Oil paint which is high quality student grade paint made by Winsor & Newton. You will use a lot of white, so get a big tube of the Titanium White.

Brushes: Get 2-4 long handle brushes in sizes 2 through 8. Hogs Hair for oil paints. Synthetic for acrylic paints. Ivory Synthetics are good for both oil and acrylic paints. These manufacturers are good: Signet Robert Simmons, Rosemary & Co Ivory, Princeton SNAP! The style of brush is a personal preference; I use Long Flats (flat tip) and Filberts (oval tip).

Palette: This is the surface you will place and mix your paints on. You can use one of the disposable grey paper palettes made by Jack Richeson & Co. Size 12” x 16” is good.

Thinner: Gamsol (Odorless Mineral Spirits) for oil, Water for acrylics.
Thinner container: Container for Odorless Mineral Spirits (oils) or water (acrylics). You will use this container to clean out your brushes.

Painting Surfaces: You will need two surfaces.
11” x 14” canvas painting panels. These are flat boards with canvas mounted on them. They are relatively inexpensive.  If you have some experience, you may bring a 16” x 20” stretched canvas.

Paper Towels

Apron or Smock to protect your clothes (optional)
Gloves to protect your hands (optional)
